Dr. Copper
The history of copper is the history of humankind.
The historical documentary series Dr. Copper tells the remarkable global story of copper in the early modern period, offering an unusual view of the history of the Habsburg monarchy and the territory of present-day Slovakia in the context of the global economy.
It is well known that the Habsburg court was one of Europe’s foremost powers: given to lavish displays of authority, celebrated for its patronage of art and science, expanding its territories through a sophisticated policy of marriage alliances, and at the same time entangled in serious and exhausting military conflicts. What is entirely unknown is the role copper played in Habsburg life, and how that copper production connects to the territory of present-day Slovakia.
Equally little known is the role of copper in the early modern global economy — in the slave trade, the Dutch Golden Age, colonisation, the period preceding the Industrial Revolution and much more.
The film answers these and many other questions. The documentary cycle consists of four episodes: “The Birth of the Habsburg Copper Empire”, “The Dutch Monopoly”, “The Struggle to Preserve the Monarchy” and “The Rise of Science”.
