Copper has accompanied humankind since time immemorial, and demand for it is rising sharply again today as it becomes a staple of advanced, high-tech industries. After the discovery of the New World and the onset of proto-globalisation, the copper trade grew to an enormous scale worldwide. Copper played one of the key roles in the development of global commerce and the global economy, and an equally important one in the life of the Habsburg monarchy. For five hundred years, copper produced in the territory of present-day Slovakia was among the most significant output in the world.
